Not sure which Diablo 2 server you should play? This Diablo 2 server finder asks four questions and ranks the official realms and private servers in our catalogue by how well they fit you.
Your best matches
No exact match in our catalogue. These are the closest servers.
How the Diablo 2 server finder works
Your game version is a strict filter: choose Diablo II: Resurrected and you will only see D2R servers, choose the original Lord of Destruction and you will only see legacy-client servers. A server is also removed if it clearly does not offer the play style you picked. For example, online-only realms drop out when you choose offline play.
Every other answer adds to the match score. A server at your preferred level of changes gets full credit, and a server one step away gets half. If our server page does not confirm your play style for a server, that answer also counts as half. If it does not confirm Hardcore, we leave that question out of the server's score instead of guessing. Each result card shows what its score is based on, so a high score with few confirmed answers is easy to spot.
When several servers have the same score, the one with more confirmed answers comes first, then the one with the higher D2 Horadric editorial score.
What the questions mean
Pure vanilla, quality-of-life or big changes
Pure vanilla means the original rules: the same skills, items, drop tables and ladder structure Blizzard shipped. Vanilla + quality-of-life keeps the familiar game but removes chores, for example with larger stash space, faster early levelling or more frequent drops. Big changes covers overhauls and total conversions with reworked skills, new items, maps and new endgame systems. Builds and guides from the original game often do not apply there.
Ladder, non-ladder and offline
A ladder season starts everyone from scratch with a fresh economy, and characters move to non-ladder when the season ends. Non-ladder keeps your characters with no resets. Offline means single-player play without connecting to an online realm, with your saves stored on your own computer.
Hardcore
In Hardcore your character has one life. If you pick Hardcore, servers that confirm a Hardcore mode get credit for it. If you pick Softcore or Don't mind, the question does not change the ranking.
Why some servers are not listed
The finder only includes active servers whose key details we could check. MaxNet is a historical realm whose current status we could not confirm, and DarkSide lacks enough public documentation for a fair match. Both remain in the Diablo 2 server catalogue with their caveats. Reign of the Warlock appears as an option inside the Diablo II: Resurrected result, because it is an expansion for the same game rather than a separate realm.
Frequently asked questions
Which Diablo 2 server should I play?
It depends on how you like to play. If you want the official game with modern graphics, start with Diablo II: Resurrected. If you want the original rules on the classic client, try Battle.net Classic or SlashDiablo. If you want a Diablo 2 private server with new endgame content, look at Project Diablo 2, Path of Diablo or Median XL. The finder above narrows this down from your answers.
Can I play Diablo 2 offline on a private server?
Usually not. Most private servers are online realms that need an account and an internet connection. Among the servers in the finder, Project Diablo 2 and Median XL support single-player play, and both official versions of the game, Diablo II: Resurrected and the original Lord of Destruction, have offline modes.
Do I need Diablo II: Resurrected to play on private servers?
Not for most of them. Many popular private servers run on the original Diablo II: Lord of Destruction client, so you need legitimate copies of Diablo II and its expansion. Blizzless is the D2R-based exception in our catalogue.
Which server is closest to the original game?
Battle.net Classic keeps Blizzard's untouched 1.14d rules. Among private servers, SlashDiablo, EuropeBattle Legacy and D2Realm stay close to the original while adding quality-of-life changes.
