About D2Runewizard Hero Editor

D2Runewizard Hero Editor is a free browser-based D2R hero editor from D2Runewizard, the community site known for its runeword lists, trackers and guides. It loads, edits and generates Diablo II: Resurrected character files (.d2s) and shared stash files (.d2i), with a strong focus on items: custom gear, runewords, base swaps and item appearance. The editor has been updated for Reign of the Warlock, and its developer, Prowner, answers questions on the site’s forum.

What you can edit

Characters can be created from scratch or loaded from your Diablo II: Resurrected save folder, then adjusted in stats, skills and equipment. The item tools are the main draw: you can create custom items, build runewords, change the base item of uniques and set items, and pick visual variants for rings, amulets, charms and jewels so they look the way you want in the inventory. Shared stash support, added in December 2025, lets you organise or fill the common stash tabs, and newer item data such as the Warlord’s Glory set has been added since.

Creating D2R custom runewords and items

For theorycrafting, being able to place D2R custom runewords on any suitable base is the fastest way to compare options, for example testing the same runeword on different weapon types or checking how a base change affects a unique. It is equally useful for restoring a lost item after a crash or preparing a character for a specific challenge. Keep stats within what the game can actually roll, though: values outside normal ranges can produce odd behaviour or saves that fail to load.

Reign of the Warlock support

When the expansion launched in February 2026, its new save format briefly broke editing, and the developer said so openly on the forum. Most features returned within days, and by July 2026 the site described the editor as compatible with Reign of the Warlock. Two details are worth knowing. First, the Warlock’s bound demon data is described as hard to parse fully, and creating new Warlock characters directly was still listed as incomplete in the forum thread. Second, players who do not own the expansion can choose an earlier save version when downloading, so the edited character stays playable without the DLC.

How to use it

Open the editor on the D2Runewizard website and load a save from your D2R folder, usually Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected inside your user profile, or start a new character. Make your changes, choose the save version that matches your game, download the file and copy it back into the save folder with the game closed. An account is optional and only used for site features such as streak rewards. Save files from mods are not guaranteed to work, and some rarely used items do not have artwork yet.

Limitations and safety

Like every save editor, it only works with offline single-player characters; Battle.net characters are stored on Blizzard’s servers. Always keep a copy of the original save, test the edited character in game before deleting the backup, and edit one character at a time. Because Warlock-specific data is still partly limited, check bound demon and Warlock items carefully after editing an expansion character. The site is protected by a bot check, so the first visit may show a short verification screen.

Who should use it

The editor suits offline players who think in items: build planners comparing runewords and bases, collectors rebuilding a lost set, and players setting up test characters for specific gear. It also works well for anyone who already uses D2Runewizard’s runeword lists, since the same site covers planning and editing. Players who mainly need safe stat and skill changes may prefer a desktop D2R hero editor with change review, and those who want the most complete Warlock support should compare it with the alternatives below.

Alternatives

The browser-based D2Emu editor covers similar ground with a stronger focus on stash tabs, the Chronicle and Warlock data, while Halbu Editor is the safest desktop choice for character and skill edits, though it does not edit items. D2R Reimagined players need the editor built for that mod, and classic LoD players need the original Hero Editor. Many players keep two editors at hand and use each for what it does best.

D2 Horadric editorial view

D2Runewizard’s editor is one of the best item-focused editors for Diablo II: Resurrected. Custom items, runewords, base swaps, visual variants, shared stash support and a version switch for players without the expansion make it a practical tool for testing and recovery, backed by an active developer. Incomplete Warlock creation and bound demon support keep it slightly behind on the newest content, but for item work it is an excellent free choice.
