About Median XL
Median XL is a long-running Diablo II: Lord of Destruction total-conversion mod designed for players who want a substantially different game built on the classic Diablo II engine. Rather than making a small set of balance adjustments, it redesigns character skills, itemization, crafting, progression and endgame encounters. The result uses the familiar perspective and combat foundation of Diablo II while offering its own build logic, economy and long-term objectives. The current site and forums identify Median XL 2.13.5 as the active version. Median XL itself runs on the Diablo II 1.13c foundation, while the official launcher handles compatibility and automatically installs the appropriate mod files. A legitimate Diablo II and Lord of Destruction installation is required. All seven character classes receive redesigned skill trees and new build paths. The item system includes original uniques, sacred uniques, sets, runewords, crafted equipment, jewels, charms and upgrade systems created specifically for Median XL. This gives players extensive room to experiment, but it also means that knowledge from vanilla LoD does not automatically transfer to every Median mechanic. Official documentation and community guides are important parts of progression. Endgame content is the project’s defining feature. Median XL adds a large collection of Uberquests, bosses, special zones, rifts, laboratories and trophy challenges beyond the original campaign. Many encounters require learning unique mechanics rather than relying only on character statistics or equipment. Progression continues through custom charms, difficult bosses and specialized farming activities, giving experienced players significantly more objectives than standard LoD. Multiplayer is provided through The Sin War, usually shortened to TSW. The realm supports seasonal Ladder play, trading, competitions and cooperative progression. Its server-status page lists game servers across North America, Europe and Asia, allowing players to select a preferred location. Season 40 statistics and active server listings confirm that the realm remains operational in July 2026. Median XL can also be played offline for players who prefer solo progression or do not want to participate in the seasonal economy. Installation is handled through the Median XL launcher. Players first install Diablo II and Lord of Destruction outside the Windows Program Files directory, place or install the launcher in the Diablo II folder and allow it to download the latest version. For online play, an account is created through the Multiplayer menu before connecting to TSW. Median XL is best suited to players who want difficult encounters, complex builds and an extensive custom endgame. Its main drawbacks are the steep learning curve, limited similarity to vanilla balance and the requirement for the original Diablo II and LoD installation rather than Diablo II: Resurrected.
