About D2R StashTabEnabler

Some Diablo II: Resurrected mods add extra pages to the shared stash, but the game will not show them until the stash save file actually contains those pages. This tiny open-source console program by Saspalor fixes that: drag your shared stash file onto it, type how many pages you want and it appends empty D2R shared stash tabs to the file, making a backup first. It was written in January 2022 for the Extended Resurrection mod and works with other mods that expand the stash in the same way.

Why mods need extra D2R shared stash tabs

The number of shared stash pages a mod can display is set in its interface layout files, such as Bankexpansionlayout.json. That only changes what the game can show. The .d2i shared stash file still holds just the pages it was created with, so the extra tabs stay unusable. Each empty page in the file is a short, repeating block of data, and adding more of those blocks is all that is needed for the game to recognise the new tabs. Doing this by hand means opening the file in a hex editor; the tool automates it.

How to add stash tabs

Close the game, then back up your save folder yourself as well. Get the program from the project’s GitHub releases page and keep its stashtab data file next to the executable. Drag the shared stash .d2i file from your mod’s save folder onto the program. When asked, enter a number from 1 to 4. The tool copies the original to a file ending in _orig_backup, numbering further backups if one already exists, then appends that many empty pages and reports Done. Start the game and open the shared stash to check the result. That is the whole process to add stash tabs for a mod that supports them.

Doing it manually

The repository also includes a short tutorial for the manual method. Start the game once without a shared stash file so a fresh, empty one is created, open it in a hex editor such as HxD, copy the first 68 bytes, which form one empty page, and paste them at the end of the file. The same block can be appended to a stash that already contains items. The tutorial notes that seven tabs was the maximum at the time it was written. This method shows exactly what the program does, and it is useful if the executable will not run on your system.

Limitations and compatibility

The project consists of a handful of commits made on 15 January 2022 and has not been updated since. Diablo II: Resurrected has changed its shared stash several times since then, most notably with Reign of the Warlock in February 2026, which added new stash tab types and changed the save format. The empty page template the tool appends was taken from the 2022 format, so using it on current stash files is untested and could damage them; keep the automatic backup and your own copy until you have checked everything in game. The program does not check how many pages the file already has, so running it repeatedly can push the stash past what your mod supports. It is a console app built on .NET Core 3.1, so the matching runtime may be required. Use it only for offline characters; it has nothing to do with Battle.net.

Better options today

Many current D2R mods create or migrate their own stash pages, and full editors can manage stash files directly. The browser-based D2Emu editor handles the personal stash and shared tabs, and GoMule can store unlimited items outside the game. Mods themselves are usually installed and merged through D2RMM. Before reaching for this program, check whether your mod’s instructions already cover the extra tabs.

Who should use it

It is mainly for players running older D2R mods built around the 2022 stash format, such as the Extended Resurrection mod it was made for, who see extra tab buttons that do nothing. It can also help modders who want to understand how stash pages are stored. Players on current vanilla D2R or the Warlock expansion do not need it and should not run it on their saves.

D2 Horadric editorial view

D2R StashTabEnabler is a clear, honest little tool: one job, a backup by default and source code you can read in a minute. For the mods it was written for, it saved players from hex editing. Its age, the lack of any checks on existing pages and the stash format changes since 2022 limit its use today, so treat it as a legacy utility for older mod setups and always test on a copy first.
