About GoMule

GoMule is the long-running muling and stash manager for single-player Diablo II. It opens character save files outside the game and lets players move items between characters, keep them in external stash files and search an entire collection in seconds. Released as open-source Java software on SourceForge in the mid-2000s, GoMule is still maintained today and now covers both classic Lord of Destruction and Diablo II: Resurrected.

What GoMule does

Offline players have always fought for space. Instead of creating dozens of mule characters and passing items back and forth in multiplayer games, the program treats characters and stash files as containers on your disk. You open a character, drag items into a separate stash file or onto another character, and save. Stash files have no practical size limit, so a whole holy grail collection can live in one or two files. A search panel filters items by name, type and stats, which makes finding a specific runeword base or a rare charm among thousands of items quick. Everything happens locally; nothing is uploaded, and online characters on Battle.net are never touched.

GoMule D2R support and the classic version

The original tool was written for classic Diablo II and LoD, and classic releases such as R0.43 remain available on the same download page. GoMule D2R support was first developed in a community fork by pairofdocs and later added to the official project. The current Resurrected line is the R5 beta series, labelled for Diablo II: Resurrected 3.0 and released between 20 and 28 February 2026, shortly after the Reign of the Warlock update. It reads and writes D2R character saves and the shared stash, and it includes mercenary item management. A separate fork, GoMule Reimagined, adapts the tool to the D2R Reimagined overhaul, whose item data differs from vanilla.

Grail reports, Flavie and DropCalc

Collectors get more than storage. The program has long come with Flavie, a report generator that turns your stored items into an HTML checklist of the uniques, sets and runes you have found, which many players use as a holy grail tracker. The project also offers DropCalc, a calculator for drop chances from specific monsters and chests. Players who prefer a dedicated web tracker can pair the program with Holy Grail Tracker, while classic players who want storage inside the game itself usually choose PlugY instead.

GoMule download and setup

The official GoMule download is hosted on SourceForge. For Diablo II: Resurrected, take the newest R5 beta package; a version without the built-in updater is also offered. For classic LoD, use an R0.4x release. Unpack the archive to any folder and run the launcher; the program needs a Java runtime, which some packages bundle. On first start, point it to your save folder, then open characters or create a new stash file. Always close the game before moving items, because D2R keeps character files open while it shows your characters in the menu, and keep a copy of your save folder before the first session. The GoMule download page lists every older build, which helps if a new beta misbehaves.

Limitations and good practice

The Resurrected builds are still marked beta, so backups matter more than usual: the D2R fork notes automatic weekly backups, but a manual copy before large transfers is safer. D2R does not allow a character to carry more than one Hellfire Torch, and extra torches placed on a character can disappear. The program is for single-player and offline characters only; it cannot manage Battle.net characters, and using edited items online is not possible. It also depends on item data matching the game version, so large mods need their own compatible builds.

Who should use GoMule

GoMule is aimed at offline players with long-running characters and large collections: holy grail hunters, players who keep a separate stash per build, and anyone who wants to back up and organise items without extra mule characters. For GoMule D2R users, the tool works best alongside a regular save backup routine, while classic players can combine it with PlugY or keep everything in GoMule stash files. Players who only need a bigger in-game stash may be better served by a stash mod, but for moving items between characters GoMule has no real replacement.

GoMule is the reference muling tool for offline Diablo II. It solves storage and organisation cleanly, adds genuinely useful collector reports and has kept pace with Diablo II: Resurrected, including a quick update after Reign of the Warlock. The beta status of the D2R builds, the Java dependency and the need for disciplined backups keep it just below the very top of our scale, but for single-player collectors it remains an essential install.
