Holy Grail Tracker is a free, open-source desktop app for the most famous long-term challenge in Diablo II: finding every unique and set item in the game. Instead of ticking items off a spreadsheet, the D2R Holy Grail tracker reads your offline character saves and stash files automatically and updates your progress while you play. It supports Diablo II: Resurrected, classic Lord of Destruction and PlugY setups, and version 2.5.0 from February 2026 added support for Reign of the Warlock saves.

What the Diablo 2 holy grail is

The Diablo 2 holy grail is a self-imposed collection goal: find at least one copy of every unique and set item, 506 items in the version tracked by the app. Many players extend it with an ethereal grail, where every item that can spawn ethereal must also be found in that form, and with runes and runewords. A full grail usually takes hundreds or thousands of hours, which is why keeping an accurate record matters. The tool removes the bookkeeping so the challenge can stay about the hunt itself.

How the app works

After installation you point the app to your save folder. It watches the character files and, for Resurrected, the shared stash, and every time the game saves it checks for new items and marks them as found. Progress is shown by category, with counters for uniques, sets, runes and runewords and a view of what is still missing. You can choose which grail type to count, normal or ethereal, search with Ctrl+F, add notes to items and switch to manual mode to tick items yourself, for example for finds that were sold or used before you started tracking. Sound alerts can announce new finds, and a built-in DropCalc integration shows drop chances for missing items.

Streaming and version 2.5.0

For streamers, the tracker can serve an overlay feed over HTTP that OBS picks up as a browser source, so viewers see grail progress live. Version 2.5.0, released on 26 February 2026 after the Reign of the Warlock update, added basic support for the new D2R save format, included Sunder Charms in the tracked items and added options to filter save files and to include or exclude items sitting in sockets. The project website still lists an older 2.3.0 changelog, so the GitHub releases page is the best place to see current builds. A community fork, TheHolyGrail by PyroSplat, adds persistent history of found items, badges and an on-top overlay.

D2R Holy Grail tracker vs the in-game Chronicle

Reign of the Warlock introduced the Chronicle, an in-game record of collected items that is part of the paid expansion. It is convenient for expansion owners who play only Resurrected. The standalone app still has clear advantages: it works without the expansion, covers classic LoD and PlugY, supports ethereal and rune tracking, offers notes, manual edits and a stream overlay, and keeps your data in files you control. Players who store finds in external stash tools can combine it with GoMule, whose Flavie reports cover a similar need for classic setups.

Limitations

The app only reads offline characters, because Battle.net characters are stored on Blizzard’s servers. It counts what is currently in your saves unless you use manual mode or the fork’s history feature, so selling or dropping an item can lower the automatic count. The Windows installer is unsigned, which the author explains is a cost decision, so Windows may show a warning on first launch. Heavily modded games with different item lists, such as D2R Reimagined, need their own trackers or data. Classic players who want more storage for their collection often pair it with PlugY.

Who should use it

The tool is aimed at offline players who collect: single-player grail hunters, hardcore players who want a record that survives their characters, and streamers running long grail series. It is also useful for anyone restarting the challenge after a break, since manual mode lets you rebuild an existing collection quickly. Players who only farm for one build and do not care about completion will get less from it, but the missing-items view with drop chances can still help plan runs. Installation takes a few minutes, and the app keeps running in the background while you play.

This is the best dedicated tool for the Diablo 2 holy grail. Automatic tracking, broad version support, ethereal and rune options and a proper stream overlay make it an easy recommendation for any offline collector, and the February 2026 update shows it is still maintained. The in-game Chronicle covers the basics for expansion owners, but serious grail hunters, classic players and streamers will still want this app.
