About PlugY, The Survival Kit
PlugY, The Survival Kit is the classic single-player companion for Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Written by Yohann Nicolas, PlugY leaves the core game intact and adds the things offline players missed most: an unlimited personal stash, a stash shared between characters, ladder-only runewords, the World Event and the Uber Quest outside Battle.net. It works with LoD 1.09 to 1.13d and with 1.14d, the final classic patch, and it remains the default choice for players who want to keep playing the original game offline.
What PlugY adds to Diablo II
Every feature is optional and is switched on or off in the PlugY.ini configuration file. Beyond storage and ladder content, it can reset spent skill and stat points, regenerate maps in single player the way multiplayer does, reopen the Cow Level portal after the Cow King is killed, keep Nihlathak’s portal open and move Deckard Cain next to the Harrogath waypoint. It also adds extra character pages with detailed stats, resistances and player and mercenary breakpoints, shows item level in item tooltips, can keep life and mana values displayed above the globes, supports windowed mode and lets several copies of the game run on one computer. Version 14.00 added automatic save backups before every save, which makes experimenting far safer.
PlugY shared stash and infinite storage
Storage is the reason most players install it. The PlugY shared stash gives every character on the same installation access to common pages, while each character also gets its own personal pages, and both sides can grow without a fixed limit. The stash itself can be enlarged to 10×10 squares. Pages can be named, marked as index pages for quick jumps, inserted, swapped or moved between the personal and shared sides using simple chat commands such as /renamepage, /insertpage and /swappage. For collectors and holy grail hunters, the PlugY shared stash removes the need to create dozens of mule characters. Players who prefer external muling can still use tools such as GoMule or ATMA, and ATMA Stash to D2R Converter was built to carry an old PlugY stash into Diablo II: Resurrected, although current GoMule builds no longer open its output.
Ladder content offline: runewords, World Event and Uber Quest
Classic Diablo II locks some content behind Battle.net ladder seasons. The plugin enables the ladder-only runewords, such as Enigma and Call to Arms, in single player and TCP/IP games. It also recreates the World Event, where selling Stone of Jordan rings spawns Diablo Clone, and opens the Uber Tristram event with the Uber versions of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto. On LoD 1.13c or newer, version 14.00 improved their AI and let them summon monsters, bringing the fight closer to what online players saw. Shared stash is disabled in multiplayer by default, so TCP/IP groups can decide whether to use it.
PlugY download and installation
The official PlugY download is available from the author’s website, and the source code with release history is mirrored on GitHub. The current PlugY download is version 14.03 from September 2021; it fixed a stash display bug and added a Korean translation. The installer places PlugY.dll in the Diablo II folder and creates a PlugY.exe launcher. Start the game through the new launcher rather than the normal shortcut, then adjust the configuration file to enable or disable features. For mods built on LoD, copy PlugY.ini, PlugY.exe and the PlugY folder into the mod directory; many mod setups are also launched through D2SE Modmanager. Players upgrading an old installation should grab a fresh PlugY download, because the author notes that all files changed in the 14.x series and old files should not be reused.
Compatibility and limitations
This is strictly an offline tool. It disables access to Battle.net and does not work on any online realm. It does not support Diablo II: Resurrected either: D2R players who want more storage use other tools, such as Expanded Stash (16×13) through D2RMM. Patch 1.14 moved the Diablo II save folder, so existing stash files have to be moved by hand when upgrading from an older version. Development has been quiet since 2021, which is less of a problem than it sounds: classic LoD has not received a gameplay patch since 1.14d, so the plugin still matches the latest version of the game it was built for.
D2 Horadric editorial view
The Survival Kit is one of the most important utilities ever made for classic Diablo II. It solves the single biggest pain of offline play, storage, and it restores ladder content without changing how the game itself plays. The lack of recent updates and the absence of D2R support keep it below the top of our scale, but for Lord of Destruction single player and LAN games it remains the standard recommendation, and many long-running offline characters exist only because of it.
