Five tools for editing offline Diablo II: Resurrected saves, ranked by what they can change, how safely they write files and how well they follow the current game.
The best save editors for D2R do different jobs, and no single tool is right for every offline player. Some change items, one refuses to touch items and concentrates on safe character edits, one exists only for a specific overhaul mod, and one edits nothing at all but moves gear between characters. This ranking orders five tools from the D2 Horadric tools catalog by how well they cover the usual reasons for opening a save file: testing a build, fixing progress after a bug, restoring a lost item and organising a collection.
How to pick a D2R hero editor
Start with what you want to change. If the answer is gear, such as a runeword on a different base, a unique for a build test or a charm lost to a crash, you need a D2R hero editor with item tools, and both browser-based picks in this list have them. If you only want to respec, set a level, reopen quests or unlock waypoints, an editor without item tools is enough and carries less risk, because item edits are where saves most easily go wrong: values the game could never roll can make an item misbehave or stop the save from loading.
If you play an overhaul mod, check whether the mod has its own editor before trying a general one. Modded saves contain items and stats that vanilla tools do not recognise, so a general editor can misread the file or damage it when saving.
Web editors versus desktop tools
The second question is where the file is processed. A desktop program reads and writes the save on your own disk. A web editor is quicker to start and works on any operating system, but depending on the site the file may be uploaded to a server for parsing. Neither approach is wrong; it is a trade between convenience and keeping files local.
- Browser, widest coverage: the D2Emu editor handles characters, items, mercenary gear and every shared stash tab, and sends files to its own server for parsing.
- Desktop, safety first: Halbu Editor works fully offline on Windows, macOS and Linux, reviews each change before writing and keeps automatic backups, but has no item editing.
- Browser, item focus: the D2Runewizard editor is built around custom items, runewords and base swaps.
- Browser, one mod only: the Reimagined editor loads the item data of D2R Reimagined and writes edits to a new file.
- Desktop, no editing: GoMule moves existing items between characters and external stash files without changing them.
Many players end up with two tools: one for character data and skills, another for items or storage.
Reign of the Warlock and save versions
The expansion changed the save format in February 2026, and the tools caught up at different speeds. Halbu has supported the expansion and the Warlock class since version 0.2.0, and its current release dates from March 2026. The D2Emu editor covers the expansion fully, including the Chronicle and the Warlock’s bound demon. The D2Runewizard editor is described as compatible again, although creating new Warlock characters was still listed as incomplete when we last checked, and it lets players without the expansion pick an earlier save version on download. GoMule’s current Resurrected builds are labelled beta. Whatever you use, confirm that the tool was updated after the game version you are running.
What a save editor cannot do
Every tool here works with offline single-player characters only. Online Battle.net characters are stored on Blizzard’s servers, so they cannot be opened, edited or restored with any of these programs, and edited items cannot be carried into online play. Classic Diablo II saves are a separate case as well: Resurrected tools write files in the Resurrected format, so Lord of Destruction players should use the older Hero Editor instead and never overwrite a classic save with a file written by a Resurrected tool.
Safe editing checklist
Whichever tool you choose, the same habits prevent almost every lost character:
- Close the game first. It keeps character files open while they are shown in the menu.
- Copy the whole save folder before the first edit, even if the tool makes its own backup.
- Change one area at a time, then load the character in game before the next change.
- Keep item stats within what the game can actually roll.
- Keep file names unchanged when copying an edited file back.
- Delete the backup only after the edited character has loaded and played normally.
How this ranking is kept current
Positions follow the criteria in the methodology note: range of editable data, safeguards, where the file is processed, expansion support and how recently the tool was updated. They do not copy the catalog scores, which rate each tool for its own purpose; that is why a storage manager with a high score sits last in a list about editing. The order is reviewed when a tool ships a major release or stops being maintained, and corrections can be reported through the Corrections page.
Methodology
Ranked editorially from each tool’s official pages, repositories and release notes, not from hands-on benchmarks. Criteria: range of editable data (character, items, shared stash), safeguards such as change review and backups, where the save file is processed, Reign of the Warlock support, and how recently the tool was updated. The order reflects fit for save editing, not the catalog score, and no pick is based on popularity claims.

Rank 1 · Tool
D2R Save Editor / D2Emu Hero Editor
Best Overall
Covers the widest range in one place: characters, items, mercenary gear and every shared stash tab, plus the Chronicle and Bound Demon data added with Reign of the Warlock. Nothing to install; the trade-off is that save files are sent to the D2Emu server for parsing.

Rank 2 · Tool
Halbu Editor
Safest Editor
A desktop app that shows a review of every change before writing, validates it against the game version and keeps automatic backups, all offline. It has no item editing, which is why it ranks second rather than first.

Rank 3 · Tool
D2Runewizard Hero Editor
Best for Custom Items
The strongest item tools here: custom items, runewords on any suitable base, base swaps for uniques and set items, and visual variants for jewellery and charms, with shared stash support. Ranked third because parts of the Warlock data were still listed as incomplete when last checked.

Rank 4 · Tool
D2R Reimagined Hero Editor
Best for D2R Reimagined
The only pick that reads D2R Reimagined saves correctly, loading the mod’s own item data and writing edits to a new file. It is not for vanilla saves, and mod updates can break it until the author catches up.

Rank 5 · Tool
GoMule
Best for Moving Items
Not an editor: it moves existing items between characters and external stash files without changing them, which makes it the lowest-risk way to organise a collection. It runs on the desktop and covers both Resurrected and classic saves; the Resurrected builds are still labelled beta.
