About Better Experience and Leveling D2RMM

Better Experience and Leveling D2RMM is a configurable leveling and experience mod for Diablo II: Resurrected that lets offline or modded players change how quickly characters gain levels, adjust XP requirements up or down, and raise the maximum character level well beyond the vanilla cap of 99, up to 999.

Built by Otterpawps, this D2RMM configurable leveling and XP curve tool requires D2RMM and was first uploaded in April 2025, most recently reaching v1.2 on 10 April 2026. The author describes it plainly as a personal project — “made this mod for myself” and open-source through D2RMM’s own files — and notes reduced gaming activity in recent updates, though a Reign of the Warlock compatibility fix still shipped in the same April 2026 release.

What you can configure

The maximum character level is adjustable from 1 to 999, with the vanilla default of 99. An experience-requirement multiplier controls how much XP each level demands: a value of 0.1 makes leveling roughly ten times faster than vanilla, 1.0 keeps vanilla pacing, and higher values slow progression for a longer grind. An “Adjust Ratio” option can remove the vanilla penalty system that kicks in around level 70, smoothing out what is otherwise an increasingly punishing curve at high levels. For characters pushing past level 99, a separate growth-rate setting (1.08 by default, meaning an 8% XP increase per level) controls how quickly requirements scale in that extended range.

Reign of the Warlock compatibility and save safety

Reign of the Warlock compatibility required real work: the mod initially did not function correctly unless characters were created in Classic or Expansion mode, and a community-contributed code fix adding Warlock class support was incorporated into the April 2026 update. The mod only edits experience.txt and leaves monsters, items, quests, zones and skills untouched, but the author is direct about save risk: it works with existing saves, but new characters are the recommended and safer use case, and backing up saves before use is strongly advised. Changing the XP multiplier on an existing save retroactively recalculates the character’s level to match its current experience total, which can move a character up or down unexpectedly.

Installing Better Experience and Leveling D2RMM

The official Better Experience and Leveling D2RMM download is hosted on Nexus Mods. With D2RMM installed, extract the mod folder into the D2RMM /mods/ directory, enable it, configure the max level and experience settings, and click Install Mods before launching the game. If other installed mods also touch experience or leveling systems, the author recommends placing this mod last in the D2RMM load order.

Known issues

Several players have reported real problems worth knowing before adjusting settings on an existing character. Multiple users found their character stopped visibly gaining experience after customizing settings, which the author attributes to configurations that require unusually large amounts of XP per level rather than a hard freeze. One player’s level 153 character reverted to level 127 on login, with experience unaffected, and killing a single monster restored the correct level but granted duplicated stat and skill points in the process. A related report found characters could become locked at certain levels depending on the chosen maximum — working at 200 or 999 but failing at 300 — tied partly to a code typo the author has since addressed, though not every case was fully resolved. Setting the maximum level below a character’s current level will demote it to the new cap and permanently remove any skill and stat points gained above that level.

Who this mod is for

Better Experience and Leveling D2RMM suits offline players who want direct control over leveling pace, whether that means blazing through the campaign or building a much longer, grind-focused character up to level 999. It is best used on new characters rather than established ones, and players relying on an existing high-level save should back it up and test settings carefully before committing to a max-level change.

D2 Horadric editorial view

Better Experience and Leveling D2RMM is an honest, actively maintained hobby project — its author is upfront about being “not a great coder” and about the mod’s rough edges, and community-contributed fixes have genuinely improved it, including Reign of the Warlock support. The level-rollback and duplicate stat point reports are real enough to take the backup recommendation seriously, but for players who stick to new characters and modest max-level settings, this remains one of the more flexible XP-pacing tools available for D2RMM.

Key Features

  • Configurable maximum character level from 1 to 999 (vanilla default 99)
  • XP-requirement multiplier for faster or slower leveling pace
  • "Adjust Ratio" option removes the vanilla level-70 grind penalty for smoother progression
  • Separate growth-rate control for XP scaling past level 99
  • Only modifies experience.txt, leaving monsters, items, quests, zones and skills untouched

Requirements

  • Windows PC installation of Diablo II: Resurrected
  • D2RMM Mod Manager
  • Strongly recommended: a new character rather than an established high-level save
  • Back up saves before use regardless

Pros

  • Genuinely flexible: same mod covers much faster leveling, much slower grinding, and a much higher level cap
  • "Adjust Ratio" option directly addresses the vanilla late-game XP grind
  • Reign of the Warlock compatibility added via a real community-contributed fix
  • Author is transparent about the mod's limitations and open-source through D2RMM's own files

Cons

  • Multiple reports of level rollback with duplicated stat/skill points on existing high-level characters
  • Some maximum-level values (e.g. 300) can cause a character to become locked, tied partly to a known code typo not fully resolved in every case
  • Lowering max level below a character's current level permanently removes skill/stat points gained above the new cap
  • Best treated as a new-character tool rather than something to apply casually to an established save
