About Expanded Storage (with Merc Equip)

Expanded Storage (with Merc Equip) is an early, once-widely-used storage expansion for Diablo II: Resurrected — a standalone mod, launched with command-line switches rather than through a mod manager, that enlarges the stash, inventory, and cube and adds mercenary equipment slots. It has not been updated since August 2022, and recent player reports describe a serious compatibility break with current patches that risks making stored items inaccessible. This is not a mod we can recommend installing as-is.

Originally by Bonesy and uploaded by locbones, this D2RMM-era storage mod reached v3.8 in 2022, with over 1,700 endorsements from its active years. It predates the D2RMM ecosystem and launches with the “-mod expanded -txt” command line switches rather than through D2RMM.

What the mod changed

At its peak, Expanded Storage enlarged the inventory to 10×8, the stash to 16×13, and the cube to 16×13, and later versions added mercenary equipment slots, controller UI support, and compatibility with pre-expansion save characters. For several years it was one of the most endorsed storage mods for Diablo II: Resurrected.

A serious compatibility break with real item-loss risk

Starting in December 2025, players began reporting that a Blizzard game patch broke the mod’s shared stash handling: the four rightmost shared stash tabs started mirroring the personal stash, making items stored there inaccessible. paleDiplodocus first flagged the issue in mid-December 2025, and dcola1 confirmed it persisted even after a fresh install. By late December, bbraskey67 reported losing unique items and runewords to the bug, and by February 2026 other players were writing simply “it doesn’t work anymore,” with at least one report of being unable to launch the game with the mod enabled at all. There has been no update or fix from the mod’s side addressing any of this — anyone considering this mod should read through the Expanded Storage (with Merc Equip) download page’s comment section first to see the full pattern of reports before installing.

The author has already pointed players elsewhere

Well before the recent breakage, the mod’s uploader, locbones, posted in March 2024 that this mod’s storage and equipment features had been folded into a separate program called D2RLaunch, and recommended players use that instead for better ongoing compatibility. Players asking in early 2026 where to move their stored items before uninstalling this mod, and requesting alternatives, received no further guidance on the mod’s own page.

Installing the mod

The official Expanded Storage (with Merc Equip) download is hosted on Nexus Mods. It installs by extracting the “expanded” folder into the Diablo II: Resurrected mods directory and launching with the “-mod expanded -txt” command-line switches — no D2RMM required. Given the current shared-stash bug and the author’s own 2024 recommendation to move to D2RLaunch, anyone still running this mod should back up their characters and stash contents before continuing to use it, and should not expect further updates.

Who this mod is for

At this point, this mod mainly matters as a piece of the Diablo II: Resurrected modding community’s history rather than as an active recommendation — it was genuinely popular and useful in its time, but the current shared-stash bug carries a real risk to stored items, and the uploader publicly pointed players toward D2RLaunch nearly two years before the breakage was even reported. Anyone still on this mod should weigh that risk carefully, back up their save data before touching the Expanded Storage (with Merc Equip) download at all, and look at D2RLaunch or a currently maintained D2RMM storage addon instead.

D2 Horadric editorial view

This is a mod whose moment has passed. It served the community well for years, but it hasn’t been updated since 2022, the author redirected users to D2RLaunch back in 2024, and a 2025-2026 game patch broke shared-stash handling badly enough that players report losing items. We’re keeping this entry for completeness and transparency rather than as a recommendation, and we’d steer anyone considering it toward a currently maintained alternative instead.
