About Mercenaries Overhaul II (D2RMM)
Mercenaries Overhaul II (D2RMM) is a mercenary-focused overhaul mod for Diablo II: Resurrected that rebalances every mercenary type and reinforces their skills, so more followers stay useful through Hell difficulty rather than a small handful of standard picks. The goal is to make choosing a mercenary feel like a real build decision rather than a fixed checklist.
Built by AnwjrzlffjBasco, this D2RMM Reign of the Warlock mercenary rebalance requires D2RMM and was first uploaded in May 2024, most recently updated to v1.12 on 15 July 2026. Crucially, the mod works only on Reign of the Warlock DLC characters — it is not compatible with classic or pre-expansion Diablo II: Resurrected characters, and should not be treated as a universal legacy D2R mercenary mod.
What changes for each mercenary type
The Act 1 Amazon Archer gains two tiers, Ranger and Hunter, both able to equip bows, crossbows, quivers and bolts with high dexterity and fast movement; Ranger sunders fire immunity while Hunter (unlocked after Nightmare difficulty) sunders physical immunity, both capping at skill level 31. The Act 2 Zakarum Warrior can equip any melee weapon outside class-specific types, is immune to stun and sunders physical immunity, also capping at skill level 31. The Act 3 Zann Esu Mage can equip any weapon type, has a Lower Resist that reduces both elemental resistances and magic resistance, enhanced Meditation and Cleansing auras that heal HP, a faster and farther-reaching Twister, and a skill cap of 37. The Act 5 Barbarian splits into a shield-and-melee Tank and a dual-wielding Berserker, both stun-immune and able to sunder physical immunity, with the Berserker gaining Combat Mastery and the Tank casting War Cry every three seconds, capping at skill level 30.
Shared mechanics across all mercenaries
Every mercenary type activates its auras or war cries immediately upon entering combat rather than after a delay, and every type gains the ability to sunder enemy immunities. A new “Command” skill lets players reposition their mercenary directly, and weapon compatibility is expanded across the board so mercenaries are no longer limited to a narrow default weapon list.
Installing Mercenaries Overhaul II (D2RMM)
The official Mercenaries Overhaul II (D2RMM) download is hosted on Nexus Mods. With D2RMM installed, extract the mod folder into the D2RMM /mods/ directory, enable it, and click Install Mods before launching Diablo II: Resurrected on a Reign of the Warlock character. One September 2025 report of every NPC name displaying as “an evil force” was suggested by another user to be fixed by placing this mod first in the D2RMM load order, though this was community advice rather than an official statement from the author.
Known issues
A May 2026 bug caused an “Unable to join game” error for characters that had completed the Blood Raven quest with a fire Rogue mercenary before installing the mod; the author fixed this in v1.11. As of this review, the Act 3 Zann Esu Mage still cannot equip elite polearms despite meeting their strength requirements — normal and exceptional versions work correctly, but one reported case involved a level 37 mage with 77 strength unable to equip a bardiche requiring only 30 strength, and no fix had been published for this specific issue.
Who this mod is for
Mercenaries Overhaul II (D2RMM) suits Reign of the Warlock players who want mercenary choice to matter, rather than defaulting to the same one or two standard picks every run. Players on classic or pre-expansion characters cannot use this mod at all, and anyone relying heavily on the Act 3 mage’s elite polearm options should expect that specific gap until it’s addressed.
D2 Horadric editorial view
Mercenaries Overhaul II (D2RMM) is an actively maintained, well-regarded overhaul, with a July 2026 update showing the author is still refining it two years after release, and community feedback consistently praising the balance of the changes. The Reign of the Warlock-only requirement is a real limitation worth knowing upfront, but for players on current characters, this is one of the more thorough mercenary rebalances available for D2RMM.
