Best Diablo 2 Graphics Wrappers
Last verified
Three graphics wrappers and one resolution add-on for classic Diablo II, ranked by patch support, picture and frame rate quality, setup effort and maintenance.
The best Diablo 2 graphics wrappers solve the same problem in different ways. Classic Diablo II and Lord of Destruction were built for the Glide, DirectDraw and early Direct3D renderers of 2000, and on a modern PC that shows up as black screens, a tiny 800×600 picture, slow Alt-Tab, broken windowed mode and the engine’s fixed 25 frames per second. A wrapper sits between the game and a modern graphics API and fixes most of that without changing how the game plays. This ranking compares four tools from the D2 Horadric tools catalog: three wrappers and one resolution add-on that works with all of them.
Check your game version first
Patch support decides more than any feature list, so start with the version number shown on the game’s main menu screen:
- D2GL lists 1.09d, 1.10f, 1.11, 1.11b, 1.12a, 1.13c, 1.13d and 1.14d, the widest range of the group.
- D2DX has all features on 1.09d, 1.13c, 1.13d and 1.14d, and works with fewer features on 1.10f and 1.12.
- cnc-ddraw needs the game’s DirectDraw renderer. Patch 1.14d no longer offers that mode, so on 1.14d a Glide wrapper is the better choice.
- SGD2FreeRes covers 1.09d, 1.10, 1.12a, 1.13c, 1.13d, 1.14c and 1.14d.
None of these tools affects Diablo II: Resurrected, which has its own modern renderer.
Diablo 2 widescreen: scaling versus a wider view
There are two different kinds of Diablo 2 widescreen. A wrapper alone scales the original picture to fill a modern monitor, ideally with clean filtering instead of blur, and all three wrappers here do that well. Seeing more of the map at once is a different change: the game has to render at a higher resolution, which is what SGD2FreeRes adds. It unlocks custom resolutions in the video options and moves the inventory and interface to fit. D2DX includes this resolution code, and D2GL and cnc-ddraw are listed as working with it without restrictions.
Wider views have a cost: rooms at the edge of the screen can appear unrendered, because the game was never designed to show that much at once.
Diablo 2 high FPS and motion prediction
The game logic runs at a fixed 25 frames per second, and raising the frame rate cap alone does not make movement smoother. For real Diablo 2 high FPS, a wrapper has to predict where characters, missiles and effects will be between game frames and draw those extra frames. D2DX introduced this motion prediction and turns it on by default on supported versions. D2GL reuses the same approach and can also load the separate d2fps smoothing mod. cnc-ddraw offers a frame limiter and VSync but no motion prediction, so it stays closer to the original look.
Linux, macOS and older Windows versions
D2GL is the most flexible outside Windows: its author lists Linux through Wine, Proton or Lutris and macOS through CrossOver. cnc-ddraw also runs under Wine and in virtual machines, with a ddraw override set in winecfg. D2DX is documented for Windows 7 SP1 and newer, with Windows 10 recommended for lower latency, and needs a DirectX 10.1 graphics card.
Installing a wrapper safely
- Copy the whole game folder before adding anything, so you can return to a clean install.
- Use one wrapper at a time. Files from two wrappers in the same folder can conflict with each other.
- Follow the start option each tool expects: D2DX and the Glide mode of D2GL start with Game.exe -3dfx, while cnc-ddraw for Diablo II uses the proxy package described in its wiki.
- If you also use PlugY or other mods, check the wrapper’s compatibility list before blaming the mod.
Online play
These tools are meant for single-player, LAN and community servers that allow them. The D2GL author warns against using custom wrappers on Blizzard’s official classic realms, and SGD2FreeRes locks resolutions to 640×480 or 800×600 on servers that are not on its approved list. Check a server’s rules before joining with any of them.
How this ranking is kept current
The order follows fit for a typical classic player in the criteria below the list: patch coverage, picture and frame rate quality, setup effort, platform support and maintenance. It does not copy the catalog scores, which rate each tool for its own purpose. Two of the three wrappers have not had a release in years, so the ranking is reviewed whenever one of them is updated or a new wrapper appears, and corrections can be sent through the Corrections page.
Methodology
Ranked editorially from each project’s README, release notes and wiki, not from hands-on benchmarks. Criteria: supported game versions, picture scaling and widescreen options, frame rate smoothing, setup effort, platform support beyond Windows and recent maintenance. The order reflects fit for a typical classic player, not the catalog score.

Rank 1 · Tool
D2GL
Best Overall
Supports the widest range of patches, from 1.09d to 1.14d, in both Glide and DirectDraw modes, and adds HD text, shader upscaling, an in-game settings menu and D2DX-style motion prediction. It also runs on Linux and macOS through Wine. The catch: no release since January 2024.

D2DX
Best for Smooth High FPS
The original motion-prediction wrapper: a single glide3x.dll, clean scaling, widescreen and smooth play above the 25 fps limit on DirectX 11. Development has been paused since 2021, and full features need 1.09d, 1.13c, 1.13d or 1.14d.

cnc-ddraw
Most Actively Maintained
The repository is still updated in 2026, and it is a reliable fix for DirectDraw problems such as black screens and broken Alt-Tab, with windowed and borderless modes and Wine support. No motion prediction, an extra proxy step for Diablo II, and little use on 1.14d.

SlashGaming Diablo II Free Resolution / SGD2FreeRes
Best Resolution Add-on
Not a wrapper but the piece that makes a truly wider view possible: custom resolutions with the interface moved to fit, working with all three wrappers above, PlugY and D2SE. It needs an external loader and locks resolutions on servers that are not on its approved list.
