About SlashGaming Diablo II Free Resolution / SGD2FreeRes
SGD2FreeRes, short for SlashGaming Diablo II Free Resolution, lets classic Diablo II and Lord of Destruction run at resolutions the original game never offered. Written by Mir Drualga of the SlashDiablo community, it adds user-specified resolutions to the Video Options menu and moves the inventory and interface panels so they line up correctly on larger screens. For many players it is the standard Diablo 2 resolution patch for modern monitors, and it is free and open source under the AGPLv3+ licence.
What the Diablo 2 resolution patch changes
The base game was designed for 640×480 and 800×600. The patch lets you pick other resolutions from the in-game Video Options menu and recalculates the position of inventory and UI elements, using the 800×600 layout as the reference. A config file, created the first time the game runs with the patch loaded, stores your resolution list and a few interface options, so limited UI customisation is possible too. The tile culling boundary was extended in later versions so that more of the map stays drawn at wider views, although rooms beyond the adjacent ones can still appear unrendered.
Supported patches and renderers
It supports game versions 1.09D, 1.10, 1.12A, 1.13C, 1.13D, 1.14C and 1.14D. In plain GDI mode resolutions are unrestricted, while the standard DirectDraw and Direct3D modes are limited to standard resolutions. With wrappers the limits disappear: cnc-ddraw and the D2GL DDraw wrapper, plus Sven’s Glide wrapper, nGlide, D2DX and the D2GL Glide wrapper. D2DX’s author added an extended API specifically so the two projects work together, and D2GL support was contributed by its own developer.
Playing Diablo 2 widescreen with mods
The patch works with the PlugY and D2SE mod systems, so a modded single-player setup can be played as Diablo 2 widescreen without giving up shared stash or other PlugY features. Note that the DLL does nothing by itself: it has to be loaded into the game by an external tool, such as a mod system or a launcher that loads extra libraries. After the first launch, edit the generated config file to set the single-player resolutions you want, then restart the game and select them in Video Options.
Multiplayer and Battle.net
Multiplayer use is deliberately restricted. On gateways that have not approved the patch, the resolution is locked to 640×480 or 800×600, and the author warns that anti-cheat systems can still detect the modified client and ban the account, even though the extra resolutions do nothing there. Do not use it on Battle.net. Approved servers have preset resolutions, typically 640×480, 800×600, 856×480 and 1068×600; the list includes Diablo 09, SlashDiablo, Resurgence and Project Diablo 2, with others added over time. Server owners request approval from the author on the SlashDiablo Discord.
Installation and setup
Get the latest release from the project’s GitHub releases page and back up your Diablo II folder first. Put the DLL where your loader expects it, configure the loader to inject it, start the game once to generate the config file, then close the game and edit the resolution list. If you also use a wrapper, set the wrapper to a matching output mode so the image is not stretched. On older systems, version 3.0.3.1 fixed a problem that stopped the library loading on Windows 7.
Version history and status
The current release is 3.0.4.0 from 15 April 2023, which added D2GL support. Earlier 3.0.3.x releases added versions 1.10 and 1.12A, fixed alignment and crash issues and extended tile culling to help D2DX motion prediction. A 3.1.0.0 version that compiles with Visual C++ 6.0 and removes the need for separate runtime files is listed as not yet available. Development continues in the repository, with commits in 2025 and server list updates as recent as September 2026, but no new release has been published since 2023.
Limitations
It only targets classic Diablo II and LoD; it is not a Diablo II: Resurrected tool. Wider views can reveal unrendered rooms near the screen edges, and gameplay balance changes when you see more of the map, which is one reason servers limit resolutions. Setup is more technical than a one-click installer because the DLL needs a loader and a config edit. As with any client modification, use it only in single player or on servers that explicitly allow it.
Who should use it
The patch suits classic single-player players and modders who want a sharper, wider picture on a modern screen, especially alongside D2DX or D2GL, as well as players on approved private servers that preset its resolutions. Players who only want better scaling at the original resolution may be happy with a wrapper alone, and Resurrected players do not need it at all.
D2 Horadric editorial view
This is a mature, well-supported way to run classic Diablo II at higher resolutions, with broad patch coverage, support for the main wrappers and a responsible approach to multiplayer. The need for an external loader, the gap since the last release and rendering limits at wide views keep it in the middle of our scale, but for classic widescreen play it remains a key part of the modern toolkit.
